John “Divine G” Whitfield
In his youth, John “Divine G” Whitfield’s admiration for Bruce Lee led him and a friend to create 8mm karate films, charging their New York neighbors ten cents per viewing. Transitioning to the 1970s, Whitfield, proficient in acting, singing, and acrobatic dance, enrolled in the High School for Performing Arts with aspirations of pursuing acting. However, his aspirations were disrupted in 1988 when he was unjustly arrested for a homicide.
Throughout his time behind bars, Whitfield dedicated himself to legal research, advocating for his and his fellow incarcerated men’s freedom. Joining what would later become RTA in 1995, he actively engaged in the organization’s initiatives. Alongside his four novels, he authored numerous plays, many of which were showcased by RTA over time.
Divine G is being portrayed by Colman Domingo in A24’s Sing Sing.
