The play’s main characters represent seven primary feelings: Passion, Depression, Wisdom, Lust, Anger, Happiness, and Love, each offering a unique lens through which to explore these overarching themes.
Through their participation in RTA’s groundbreaking theater program, the cast and crew are not only honing artistic talents and skills but more importantly—finding avenues for personal growth, introspection, and redemption through the process.
Shawn P., shares his journey with RTA and the profound impact of the program on his life. “I’ve been an active member of RTA since 2019,” he explains, “and I first learned about RTA through another member when we were cell mates in F-block.” For Shawn P, RTA provided a pathway to self-discovery and rehabilitation, offering him opportunities to explore his passions and talents beyond the confines of his incarceration.

As Shawn P. delves into his role as Passion, he finds himself connecting with the larger themes of the play. “Reading scene 9 reminded me of when I had aspirations of playing professional football,” he reflects. “But I eventually turned my focus to the criminal lifestyle because I believed that my only path to success was through sports or the streets…but the reality is we have so many more options that we can pursue to be successful, but we don’t look into these because, for a majority of us, we don’t have access to the resources that can provide us with the necessary tools to be successful in areas that are more positive and productive.”
Through his portrayal of Passion, Shawn P. confronts the societal pressures and systemic barriers that limit opportunities for individuals like himself, offering a poignant reflection on the paths not taken and the possibilities for change.
Similarly, Kenny P., who plays the character of Depression, reflects on his journey with RTA and the transformative impact of the program. “I attended an RTA production titled ‘Cafe of the Heart’ in 2018,” he shares, “and I was impressed so much that I signed up to join RTA the next week.” Through RTA, Kenny P. found a platform for personal growth and development, honing leadership skills and fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among his fellow cast members.

Eddie C., who plays the character of Wisdom, echoes the sentiments shared by other members, emphasizing the profound impact of RTA on his life. “RTA has impacted me in many ways,” he asserts. “It has kept me on the right path for the past six years, contributing to my personal growth and development.” Through his participation in “Thoughts of a Colored Man,” Eddie C. explores themes of heritage, culture, and masculinity, offering a nuanced reflection on his own experiences and perspectives.
As the production unfolds, the cast members invite audiences to engage with the powerful themes explored in “Thoughts of a Colored Man” and to contemplate the broader implications for society. Through their performances, they seek to inspire dialogue and reflection, challenging preconceptions and fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse experiences of the human condition.
In closing, the production’s Co-director George A., reflects on the significance of the play and the broader mission of RTA. “I have transformed the way I speak, the way I view the world, and the way I give myself to the world. RTA is a place where the kid you once were can now dream as the adult that you are. RTA is a dream in the middle of a nightmare. It is my second home. A place to be free mentally.”
